Our youth are reporting worsening emotional and mental health, and inequities for young Māori and Pacific peoples are growing. Our article includes strategies and tips that may helpful when a distressed young person presents in primary care.
Youth mental health - Supporting our young people
This webinar is presented by GP Cathy Stephenson, and child and adolescent psychiatrist Arran Culver, and explores:
- the prevalence of mental ill health for youth, using local and international data
- the gold standard management for youth depression and anxiety, and how to differentiate between mild, moderate and severe presentations
- barriers to providing the best management
- what we can learn from the He Ako Hiringa EPiC data, which show increasing psychotropic prescribing rates for youth, but also marked inequity for Māori and Pacific youth
- how the prescribing data can influence our practice
- where practitioners can find more resources and education.

Speakers
Dr Cathy Stephenson
Dr Cathy Stephenson is a Wellington based GP. In her clinical role, she supports young people as part of the 502 Rangatahi Ora team in Porirua.
In 2022 Dr Stephenson moved from the RNZCGP, where she was clinical lead of the training programme, to take up the role of principal health advisor for the Ministry of Social Development, where she hopes to play a role in supporting New Zealanders and their whānau to thrive and live their best lives.
She is passionate about educating and informing patients and colleagues, and has authored columns on health and wellbeing for many years in Stuff, New Zealand Doctor Rata Aotearoa and via other forums. Dr Stephenson is a senior clinical lecturer in intimate partner violence and sexual harm at the University of Otago, and was previously the clinical lead for Piki, a rangatahi mental health service in the lower North Island.
Dr Arran Culver
Dr Culver is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and has worked in the mental health and addiction sector across DHB, Ministry of Health, NGO, kaupapa Māori and primary care settings. He has a range of wider sector leadership and governance experience and has strong interests in life-course developmental, early intervention, and population level approaches to mental health and wellbeing.
